Every day we shape our destiny by what we think and do. We are living in a time where the impossible can become the possible at any moment. Our bio-medical knowledge is doubling approximately every 3.5 years. This means that at our current rate of advancement, within twenty years we will know 64 times as much as we know at this moment. And yet, even with all this expanding knowledge, chronic, degenerative diseases are on the increase. Today, the risk of dying of anything before you are 40 is really very small. But starting at 40, you enter the zone of the 7 deadly diseases. So, here are some checklist to see if a few new habits could add years and fun to your life.

  • What is your body-mass index? Why it matters: Active women whose BMI (a measure of body fat) falls between 18.5 and 22.9 may be 2.5 times more likely to age free of disease than overweight, sedentary women. Excess body fat secretes proteins and acids that can up your risk for cancer and more. A BMI below 23 is best, but less than 25 is good. Keep on moving!
  • How many hours of sleep do you get per night? Why it matters: Snooze fewer than six hours a night and you may be 12 percent more likely to die earlier than if you logged six to eight. Getting less than seven hours disrupts hunger-regulating hormones, causing weight gain and related concerns.
  • Do you have a pet? Why it matters: Cat owners have a 40 percent lower risk of dying from a heart attack than non-owners. Both felines and canines can reduce loneliness and depression, emotions linked to early mortality. Not ready to adopt your own fur ball? Pet-sit for a pal or walk dogs for an animal shelter. the dangers of ‘Vengeance Surgery’

Records show that most plastic surgery patients are women, with an increasing number coming off a bad breakup. The phenomenon is called “vengeance surgery” and should be treated with due attention, a surgeon warns. People go under the knife for a variety of reasons. Whichever they may be, though, they must be deeply grounded in fact, because surgery is not something one should do in the spur of the moment. Either should it be something one does because of outside pressure or because one is looking to get their revenge at an ex in the all too familiar fashion of “looking good is the best revenge possible.”

According to studies, more and more women are coming into his practice requesting surgery because, they say, it’s their way of coping with a bad breakup or a divorce. In such cases, counseling should come before the scalpel. “I have a lot of patients coming to me going through marital splits and you have to consider their emotions. Clearly, having surgery during a relationship breakdown is not good idea – it’s a big undertaking,” Dr. Nduka says. Read more… »

It happens all the time. You change your eating habits; start exercising and you lose weight steadily each week. Then suddenly as you get closer to your goal your weight loss begins to slow down drastically and eventually seems to come to a standstill. No matter how hard you try, you cannot get the scale to move and weeks go by while you are still the same weight. This is perhaps the most challenging part of losing weight and getting fit and it is also where you are the most vulnerable. This is the point where you are at the most risk to fall back into old habits. It is very frustrating to be doing everything right and trying so hard and not seeing those numbers change on the scale. It is frustrating enough to make you reach for a bag of candy to make yourself feel better. Before you reach for that candy and sabotage all your hard work, know you are not alone. You have simply hit a plateau.

A plateau is simply when your weight loss efforts come to a standstill. It happens to everyone at one point in their weight loss. The problem is, since we are all different, we can’t predict exactly when a plateau might happen to us but when it does it is not fun. A plateau does should not mean that we are going to fall back into our old habits. A common misconception that we have about plateaus is that they mean we failed. We haven t failed. We are just at a standstill.

So what can we do to break through this plateau? The first thing is to make sure you are eating properly. Make sure you are eating enough to compensate for your workout also. Ideally you should eat within a half hour to 2 hours after your workout to refuel your system and make sure it is a balanced meal that includes carbs. You might want to try drinking a little more water to avoid dehydration also. Read more… »
