A 10-Minute Nose Job

A 10-Minute Nose JobMost of the statistics show that the number of people who are so unhappy about their nose that they would go to extreme lengths to fix it isn’t anywhere close to small. However, rhinoplasty can’t always be the option because, first and foremost, it is an expensive procedure that also requires plenty of recovery time. This is why another intervention has come to gain popularity: the nonsurgical reshaping of the nose with the help of fillers.

Basically, this procedure consists of injecting cosmetic filler that is already used for other areas of the face in certain points of the nose in order to alter its shape and make it better looking. It lasts about ten minutes and leaves no bruising or scarring because it requires no recovery time. Of course, it is not permanent either, since the filler is broken down and naturally eliminated by the body in about 12 to 18 months tops, but that is not seen as a setback by those who have already tried it.

Still, Nigel Mercer, president of the British Association for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, warns all those rushing to get the procedure that they should put it off for a while longer until further tests are carried out as to its safety. As it is now, those who agree to undertake it are nothing short of guinea pigs, he explains, because the long-term effects have not yet been determined.

easy way to cut dementia?

easy way to cut dementia?

A new study suggested that older people who drink moderate amounts of alcohol may have a lower risk of dementia. They found people who consumed between eight and 14 alcoholic drinks a week had a 37% lower risk of the disease than the general population. However, people who consumed more than 14 drinks a week were at twice the normal risk of developing dementia.

This study was presented at the International Conference on Alzheimer’s Disease. The researchers focused on 3,069 people aged 75 or older. At the beginning of the six-year study, 2,587 participants had no signs of problems with their brain while 482 had mild cognitive impairment. During the study 523 new dementia cases emerged. The researchers took account of factors such as smoking, depression and social activity, and found that one or two drinks a day was associated with a 37% lower risk of dementia among those who were cognitively normal at the start of the study. Anyhow, among those who already had mild cognitive impairment alcohol intake was associated with faster cognitive decline.

Why a moderate amount of alcohol seems to be good for the brain is not clear. Lead researcher said that there are several possible ways in which moderate drinking might be associated with reduced risk of dementia. One is the same as the way we think moderate alcohol reduces the risk of heart disease, by beneficial effects on HDL cholesterol and blocking platelets. And, animal studies have shown that low amounts of alcohol stimulate the release of acetylcholine, a chemical in the brain that is important in memory. Although moderate alcohol intake does appear to reduce dementia risk, exceeding one to two drinks per day on a regular basis – becoming a heavy drinker – may double risk of developing dementia.

saving cash in water

watering your garden!

Does your green thumbing require lots of water? Give your wallet a lift: Save cash and water by watering your garden in the early morning. Not quite a free ride, but still pretty sweet.

  • Just water and set your sprinkler timer for early in the a.m.
  • Water your garden only when the ground is dry.
  • Make sure your sprinklers are directed to water your garden – not your concrete.
  • Raise the level of your lawn mower to 2 or 3 inches. Longer grass keeps moisture better because it shades the roots.

Here are some benefits in doing this: You can have more water to keep hydrated on road trips. Up to 30% of water used for midday watering will evaporate, while night time watering causes your garden to stay damp longer, sometimes leading to mold. And, you will not hiking up your water bill. About 50%-70% of the water a typical household uses goes to the lawn and garden.

my favorite, siomai

siomaiThis is my favorite food aside from spaghetti. It is called Siomai for those who don’t know its name. I have been trying to cook this food because I want to have a stock in my fridge. The sad thing is that I am not getting it right. But I’ll keep on trying until I get it right. I will save this recipe here so that I will not lose it and my visitors and friends can use it.
Shrimp and Pork Siomai Ingredients:

  • Pinoy Pork Siomai 1 kg ground pork (suggested proportion of fat to lean meat is 1:3) or 1 kg Prawn (shrimp) peeled
  • 1/3 cup chopped water chestnuts or turnips (singkamas)
  • 1/3 cup chopped carrots
  • 2 medium or 1 large minced onion(s)
  • bunch of spring onions or leeks
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 50 pcs. large or 100 pcs. small wanton or siomai wrapper
  • soy sauce, calamansi (lemon or kumquats), sesame oil and chilli paste (for the sauce)

Mix all the ingredients for the filling in a bowl. Spoon 1 tablespoon of mixture into each wrapper. Fold and seal. Boil water and brush steamer with oil. Arrange the siomai in the steamer and let stand for 15-20 minutes, longer for larger pieces.
Serve with soy sauce, calamansi and sesame oil. Chilli paste is optional.

Fox in her Hot Dress

Fox in her Hot Dress

These days Megan Fox is absolutely gorgeous, making this statement has become redundant since the very mention of her name implies it. While she insists she wants to be more than just a pretty face and the hottie all magazines want on their cover, it’s for her great looks that Megan Fox continues to steal the thunder, like she also did at the premiere of the latest “Transformers” film in Germany.

She was dressed in a one-shoulder asymmetrical red dress and Brian Atwood’s “Wagner” open-toe pumps, and leaving little to the imagination, Megan Fox was the other night “95% legs and 100% hotness,” as celebrity website says. What was even more interesting about the floor-long dress – aside from the high side-slit that revealed her incredibly toned legs – was the side cut-out that had a golden snake “slithered” around its edges, as if it was not holding it in place but actually toying with it.

Well, for this type of daring outfit, the actress was little accessorized save for a pair of tiny tear earrings and a wide golden band on one of her wrists. Makeup was similarly kept down to a minimum, while the hair was pulled back in a very “good girl”-type of ponytail, which only served to place more emphasis on Fox’s best facial features, the piercing green eyes and the full set of lips that have often prompted comparisons with Angelina Jolie.

getting pregnantSome of my friends are afraid to get married not unless their boyfriends get them pregnant. I don’t get the idea of this cliché because if you love the person there is no need to wait to get pregnant. Most of their reason is that they want to make sure they’ll end up in a happy marriage. It’s a good reason, but it’s not all there is to be happy.

There are really couples who have difficulty in conceiving. This is a very frustrating thing of course, but this should not be the cause for being single for a long period of time. Here are the most common causes for pregnancy difficulty.

Ovulatory or sperm problems. For women, these includes hormonal imbalances that disrupt their ovulatory cycle; for men, the number of sperms, their size and shape, their ability to move. Age also affects the quality of both ovum and sperm.

Anatomical problems. These involve the fallopian tubes (where the ovum passes) or the seminal tract (where the semen passes), among others.

Lifestyle factors. Being overweight, smoking, drinking and stress may affect fertility.

There are many factors aside from the three. The best way is to visit a physician who will shed more lights than just guessing.
